ABOUT

Rebecca Gill
Costume maker
Recipient of the 2024 Special Award Certificate, for recognition of commitment and outstanding achievements in BA (Hons) Costume Construction.

After progressing from a textiles GCSE into a level 3 extended diploma in Fashion Design, I realised that fashion was not for me. As a competitive gymnast of 17 years who was constantly surrounded by bright colours, sparkle and beautiful leotards, performance costume was a pathway I wanted to explore. I gained experience in self-taught leotard making and have begun advancing into making dance costumes, providing the opportunity to work with unconventional fabrics and materials. Since achieving a First Class Honours on the BA(HONS) Costume Construction degree at University Centre South Essex, in collaboration with the Royal Opera House and awarded by University Of The Arts London, I have commenced my costume career.
My technical construction skills have developed to a professional standard and I have refined the essential ability to manage my time, reach deadlines, problem solve and work in a team, as well as independently. I am highly trained in costume making, including design, pattern drafting, tailoring, tutu making and alterations. I have learnt to produce fit-for-purpose costumes, which are considerate of the performers’ and audiences’ requirements. I have acquired comprehensive knowledge of dressing and quick changes, through hands-on experience working backstage as a dresser on a variety of performances.
Since graduating, I have explored a variety of disciplines as a costume maker. This includes: working as a Costume Revivals Assistant Technician with the Royal Ballet and Opera, repairing and altering costumes for upcoming show runs. Freelancing for professional individuals, assisting with costume making on a variety of projects. I am currently working as a costume workshop trainee on an upcoming film production. I am an enthusiastic individual, who looks forward to working with others, as well as continually learning and developing my skills.
