VALUABLE SKILLS
The following will display some of my most valuable skills, which can be adapted and applied to any role in the industry.
Costume Construction
Trained on the BA (Hons) Costume Construction course at University Centre South Essex, I have learnt all the essential skills of a costume maker. I recognise the importance of considering a performers needs and constructing a costume which honours these.

Fittings and Alterations
Skilled in altering and fitting costumes, to ensure comfortability and confidence for the performer. My experience fitting costumes for a range of body types is something I take pride in. I carry these out with professionalism, to make certain each costume is fit for purpose and the performer feels content.

Hand-finishing and Embellishments
Experienced in embellishment, including crystal rhinestones, fabric paint and appliques, as demonstrated by my experience making gymnastics leotards and dance costumes. Making costumes in the third year of my degree gave me the opportunity to work with a wide range of trims and decoration.

Pattern Drafting
I have learnt to interpret pattern cutting books, to produce bespoke patterns to a performers measurements. I understand the importance of precision, certifying my patterns will transfer from 2D into fabric, functioning as a well fitted costume.

Designing
With a key eye for detail since completing my textiles GCSE, designing costumes and leotards has been a process I thoroughly enjoy. Transforming research, initial ideas, patterns, colour palettes and textures into a design, makes the completed costume that much more rewarding.

Industrial and Domestic Machinery
I have been fully trained in the use of industrial and domestic sewing machines, overlockers and irons. These skills are essential in ensuring a high standard of craftsmanship and professional finish is met.

Padding out a Mannequin
Having easy access to a performer may not always be possible. On my degree, I have learnt the foundational knowledge of padding out a stand to a performers measurements. This guarantees a costume's perfect fit, without having numerous fittings.

Wardrobe Skills
I have acquired comprehensive knowledge of theatre wardrobe production processes through hands-on experience working backstage as a dresser. General maintenance and laundry is essential to the smooth running of a production.

Sampling
I completely understand that to get to a finished costume, a journey must be taken. Sampling is a skill which I have grown to enjoy massively, allowing me to explore various options which will realise a designer's vision.

Research
Every costume begins somewhere. Creating the concepts for four costumes on my degree enabled me to venture into research pathways. These include visiting exhibitions, viewing archives, observing costumes, reading books and looking back on history. I can use these sources to inspire my ideas.
