ROYAL OPERA HOUSE PRIZE COSTUME

Provided the brief by the Royal Opera House, students were tasked with making a costume which represents the opera "Carmen". This costume was created for the character of Don José, The Corporal of The Spanish Dragoons. "Dragoons' earned their name from the weapons they wield during the Napoleonic war. Known to have emit fire when shooting their carbine, these soldiers gained a resemblance to the modern-day construct of a Dragon.

Constructed for Act I of the opera, this costume concept blends historic military uniforms with the influences of mythical dragons. Smocking has created fabric scales resemblant of those seen on dragons in a variety of genres.
